World’s Most Dangerous Book Design

This project involved the cover design and layout of a 100+ page book written by Michael Haglund, attorney for the Columbia River Bar Pilots. The project involved close collaboration with the author, an illustrator, and Columbia River Maritime Museum staff managing the project. The goal for the cover design, in particular, was to convey the extreme conditions in which the Columbia River Bar Pilots work, without sensationalizing the ever-present danger they face.

In 2014, The Museum Store Association named the book World’s Most Dangerous the winner of the product development category for the Pacific Northwest area. The award is based on production quality, market research and design engineering, and was selected out of submissions from museums, aquariums, zoos and other cultural institutions from Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and the Northwest and Yukon territories of Canada. Other product development awards went to the Museum of Fine Arts–Boston, The National World War II Museum, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and the Harn Musem of Art.
